I’m back to looking at Marty Haugen songs in Gather Comprehensive not already covered on this blog.
This one is his setting of Ruth Duck’s marvellous text, which fits with the fishermen songs I’ve done this week as a call to mission. She wrote this text for the ordination of her long-time friend Elizabeth Caldwell. It is also set to REGENT SQUARE.
Haugen’s music can be purchased at GIA, where her text is in their preview.
My backing came out country on BIAB.
Wow, this is one of the best collection of resources and commentaries on the Australian Church music scene. How did I not hear of this earlier!
I really love the backing tracks that you do. Our parish has been using Mass Shalom for a long time and I really want to change. I like the sound of Mass of Glory and Praise (and it seems more guitar-friendly, too). Your backing will be a very useful resource for learning and familiarisation.
I haven’t explored your site much, so I’m sorry if this is a silly question. Do you provide high quality version of your backing tracks for download or purchase?
(Btw, our parish also has the AOV Next Generation which I haven’t used before. So, I’ll also be exploring your posts on the Next Gen!)
Thanks once again for putting together these resources and sharing them!
G’Day Danny and thanks.
It’s not a silly question about buying backings.
I used to have download links for the backings but the copyright implications were too complicated and costly. I don’t sell the backings either, so they really are meant for learning purposes. They are mostly quick sketches on Band in a Box made into MP3 files. I highly recommend BIAB if you want to make your own backings.
I recommend Wayne McHugh’s site for backings, as they are played through his free midi player, which means you are in control of the mix, tempo, key etc and he has sorted out all the copyright issues.

Mass Shalom is really lousy to play on guitar but Glory and Praise is really very good from that perspective.
If you are struggling for musicians, I recommend this post I made some time ago.

If you have musicians then good luck and have fun with Next Gen.
