Tridium 2023

This year we will be playing Friday and the Vigil with another group doing Thursday and Sunday. Last year’s post covered most of the territory.

Our priest has asked for Good Friday to be low key and quiet. We can enter and leave in silence and just play softly for Veneration and Communion.

“Behold the Wood” by Dan Schutte with his “Holy Darkness” if needed will be good for Veneration. “Jesus Remember Me” (Berthier) will cover quiet music for Communion.

For Vigil we use Tony Alonso’s Exsultet. This is now at GIA.

Here we use three psalms in the readings and we will sing the responses using Amanda McKenna’s settings.

Psalm 32

The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord,

The goodness of the Lord.

Psalm 15

Keep me safe O God; you are my hope.

Keep me safe O God; you are my hope.

Exodus 15

Let us sing to the Lord;

He has covered himself in glory.

Otherwise we use Taylor’s Mass of St Francis except for the Celtic Alleluia.

Sprinkling Rite: River of Glory (Schutte)

Gifts: Blessed be Our God (McKenna)

Communion: Glory in the Cross (Schutte) – Easter verses

After Communion: Alleluia! Love is Alive (Angrisano, Manibusan, Hart)

Recessional: Jesus is Risen (O’Brien/Ogilvie)

We had kind of a strange Holy Thursday Mass. For some reason we’re still skipping the actual washing of the feet portion of the Mass, which is my favorite part of Holy Thursday. Very disappointing. (I checked the livestreams of four other local parishes and they all did the foot washing as normal.) Also, the opening song was certainly a choice.

Gathering: All Glory, Laud, and Honor (tr. Neale; ST. THEODULPH) – Did we do this Palm Sunday song on Palm Sunday? No. Did we do it on Holy Thursday? Yes.
Gloria: Mass of St. Ann (Bolduc)
    Psalm: Our Blessing Cup (Soper)
Gospel Acclamation & Eucharistic Mass Parts: Mass of the Angels and Saints (Janco)
    Gifts: The Servant Song (Gillard)
Communion: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (Watts; HAMBURG) – choir arrangement
    Eat This Bread (Berthier)
Procession: Pange, Lingua, Gloriosi (Aquinas; ST. THOMAS)

I agree, that is passing strange.

Good Friday was more normal… It was simple with just piano with a cantor.

Veneration of the Cross: Behold the Cross (Schutte)
        Give Me Jesus (Hansen/spiritual)
        Behold the Cross (Hurd)
        Carry Me Home (Alstott/Modlin)
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (Watts; HAMBURG)
        Were You There (spiritual)
        Who Is the Crucified? (Bluett/Keil)
Communion: Unless a Grain of Wheat (Farrell)

Gifts: Worthy Is the Lamb (Manalo)
Communion: Come to the Water (Foley)
    Behold the Lamb (Willett)
To Live With Him Forever (Hart/Feduccia)
Closing: Alleluia! Alleluia! (Wordsworth; HYMN TO JOY)
