Santa Maria del Camino / Come As We Journey BB 694

This Marian social justice song by Juan A. Espinosa was added for Breaking Bread in 2020. This style is not part of our local culture but the song is singable and liturgically useful. If YouTube covers are any indication it is a popular song. There is an English text as well.

The text is at OCP in their sample and they will sell you the sheet music.

We did this song as part of a Las Posadas inspired Christmas pageant a few years ago at the school where I teach. (Las Posadas, which means “lodging” in Spanish, is a Latin American tradition of reenacting Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem.) For this song, a handful of our school’s older students sang the verses in English and the rest of the school responded with the refrain in Spanish.

We did a few other songs from OCP’s Las Posadas collection along with some traditional carols in English. I know Spanish isn’t nearly as common in Australia as it is here in the US, but if anyone is interested in that collection, here’s a link:

Thanks, Ryan. If I am doing songs from American sources, I’ll come across these songs and they are expanding my knowledge of inculturated liturgical music.

We have extremely diverse populations in Australia, but no one group dominates as Spanish speaking people seem to in Catholic churches in the USA. I hope my backings don’t sound like caricatures of Latin arrangements.

Thanks for the link and your reporting of music selections for Mass.

      cheers

      Geoff
