Jesus, I Come AA 79

I’ll have a break from Shirley Erena Murray for a while after this sung prayer from Alleluia Aotearoa.

The text and sheet music are at Hope Publishing. It is set to LITTLE VENICE by Gerald Knight. I got the chords from Together In Song for my backing.

In The Name Of Christ We Gather AA 69

This is another gathering hymn from Shirley Murray with yet another insightful text in Alleluia Aotearoa.

The text and the sheet music for the setting by Colin Gibson (KNOX COLLEGE), which is also the one selected in AA, is at Hope Publishing.

No chords were available this time so my backing is approximate.

AA says it can also be set to WESTMINSTER ABBEY.

By the miracle of a metrical text, YouTube says it can be set to lots of other tunes:

How Happy You Who Work For Peace AA 63

This is a Beatitude in song for the peacemakers from Shirley Erina Murray in Alleluia Aotearoa.

The text is at Hope Publishing. They set it to GONFALON ROYAL by Percy C. Buck.

I took the BIAB file from Small Church Music and put organ sounds on it.

This is the real thing:

In AA they use a setting by Ian Render and chords were available so no guessing this time.

Here We Bring, Small or Great AA 62

My survey of Shirley Erena Murray songs from Alleluia Aotearoa continues with this text for offering that I suppose we Catholics could use for Gifts. It is in her usual direct pithy style.

Be convicted by her text available at Hope Publishing, along with the sheet music.

The setting, ASHLEY, by Colin Gibson, once again has no chords so it’s another approximate BIAB backing.

Here to the House of God We Come AA 61

This is a song that ties our gathering to our need to act. The text from Shirley Murray highlights the shared table and welcoming the dispossessed.

In Alleluia Aotearoa it is set by Colin Gibson (KHAO I DANG).

The sheet music and text are at Hope.

My backing has more of my approximate chords.

I saw on You Tube it was also set to ST PETERSBURG. I made a backing with the BIAB fake organ.

Here Is The Place AA 60

This is a Shirley Murray song from Alleluia Aotearoa for confirmation, artfully set by her frequent collaborator Colin Gibson (GREEN ISLAND)

The text and sheet music are available at Hope Publishing.

Hymnary also suggests SUANTRAI.

God of the Galaxies AA 54

Shirley Murray titled this text “Honour the Earth”. It is ideal for any liturgy with a focus on creation and the environment.

In Alleluia Aotearoa it is set to CHEAM by Douglas Mews. The text and sheet music are at Hope Publications. The tune is great except for a very long held Eb note.

I made up chords for this BIAB backing:

God Of Our Every Day AA 52

This is another Shirley Murray text from Alleluia Aotearoa. It is a prayer seeking direction and encouragement.

The text is at Hope Publications, which has the sheet music of the setting by Colin Gibson, JANSEN. That is also the setting in AA.

I’m afraid my backing does it no favours, using made up chords and the BIAB fake organ.

God of Freedom, God of Justice AA 50

Shirley Murray wrote this hymn for prisoners of conscience that is in Alleluia Aotearoa. The Church of Scotland provides commentary:

The work of Shirley Erena Murray, A former Methodist, now an ‘ecumenical Presbyterian’ (b.1931 in Aotearoa / New Zealand), appears in hymn books all over the world. The themes of her hymns … range from social justice, peace, human rights and the voice of women, to the sacraments, the Church year, and eco-theology. This hymn … was written to fill a gap in the hymn vocabulary, for a service for prisoners of conscience as part of Amnesty International’s campaign against torture (1980).

The text is at Hope Publications where they provide two settings.

The first is FU DE WEN-NUAN by Lim Swee Hong. It says to play with vigor but I think my backing with its made up chords is a bit of a fail – just sing along to learn it.

The other setting is the one also in Alleluia Aotearoa, TREDEGAR by Guthrie Foote. Thankfully, this song is also in Together In Song 657, so I had the chords.

It is also set to PICARDY:

Goodness, these clips says you can also set it to RHUDDLAN.

PICARDY:

TREDEGAR
