More Advent goodness, this time from RS’s parish. I’ve blogged this text before here, but this is more from Trevor Thomson, who has done a moving setting. It appears a solo proposition to me, but your assembly might be game.
The text by John Brownlie is at Hymnary. The sheet music can be purchased at OCP.
It is always good to interrupt what I’m doing for topical posts, in this case an Advent song that I believe I haven’t covered before that was used at Ryan’s parish. It is a relatively recent song by Trevor Thomson with a lot going for it.
Despite changing key from E to Em and back several times, it remains singable and for once the key change really does add interest and lift to the tune.
The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where the text is in their preview.
Years ago I bought a ratty second hand copy of OCP’s Guitar Accompaniment Book c2005. It fills in the blanks of OCP songs that didn’t make As One Voice in Australia. I have been blogging the songs on and off for years and I’m diving back into the M’s.
This is a lovely devotional song that OCP suggests for adoration. It is by Rufus Zaragoza OFM. It has versions in Spanish, Vietnamese and English.
It would be more singable in C rather than D I think.
The sheet music can be purchased at OCP, where the text is in their preview.
Ryan’s parish sang this for Christ the King last week. It appears well known in the US but I’ve never heard it before. It is by an unknown author and set to WONDROUS LOVE. I have a copy in my Gather Comprehensive 614, but they leave out the verse with God’s frown.
I found this arrangement by Joel Littlepage online. Hymnary have sources etc here.
1 What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul, what wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul!
2 When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down, when I was sinking down, sinking down; when I was sinking down beneath God’s righteous frown, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul, for my soul, Christ laid aside his crown for my soul!
3 To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing, to God and to the Lamb, I will sing; to God and to the Lamb, who is the great I AM, while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing, while millions join the theme, I will sing!
4 And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on; and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be, and through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, and through eternity I’ll sing on!
This is a “Christmas Communion Processional” with a text by Tony Alonso set to the tune of THE HOLLY AND THE IVY. We will use it this Christmas.
The sheet music can be purchased at GIA where the text is in their sample. Being public domain the sheet music for the tune is easily available at various sites on the internet.
This is a new song (for us) for Advent that we will be playing to accompany the Advent wreath and light the candles. It is by Chris de Silva – not the one from Perth, the other one.
I suspect the refrain will be all we need for this occasion, however it has a non-Advent refrain as well as verses for gathering and communion, so it will be useful elsewhere in liturgies once we have learnt it over Advent.
It can be purchased for download at GIA, where you can find the text in their preview.
My version has a bossa flavour to sing maranatha to.
For Advent we switch to the Mass of St Francis by Paul Taylor. This year for the wreath we are using “Come, Lord Jesus” by Chris de Silva (the American one). We will use Marty Haugen’s “Be With Me Lord” as the seasonal psalm. Instead of a thanksgiving hymn we will have quiet reflection.
I was not available to assist the team with the selections for Advent, so many thanks to those who did contribute.
Entrance: O Come, O Come Emmanuel (Neale) AOV 1/174
Gifts: Come to Set Us Free (Farrell) AOV 1/39
Communion: Gather Your People (Hurd) AOV 1/71
Recessional: God of Day and God of Darkness (Haugen) AOV 1/56
This is a relatively new song from Bob Hurd that turned up in a liturgy at Ryan’s parish. It’s new to me so I had a look at it. He based it on passages from Isaiah 35.
It is a stirring and singable hymn that might suit a recessional or for times of distress.
The sheet music can be purchased at OCP where the text is in their preview.
I've worked my way through the As One Voice books and other collections making backings on Band in a Box to help me (& you if you're interested) learn new songs for church. This is aimed at churches and musicians that own the collections but haven't exploited them fully. If you don't have them they are certainly worth buying. This site is educational, nonprofit and designed to enhance the commercial prospects of songwriters. This site does not distribute copyrighted sheet music.
