Note – we have been directed to begin the Communion music now at the priest’s communion (straight after the “Lord I am not worthy”) and so have started to have 2 communion hymns as we run short with just one. Have any other parishes started doing this as well?
We begin right when the priest takes communion. We have kind of a gradual building into our communion song. Our pianist or organist begins playing the intro to the song (generally the refrain) softly right after “Lord, I am not worthy…” After a couple measures, the song announcement is done. After the announcement, the pianist/organist begins playing the rest of the intro at full volume and other instruments begin playing (if there are any others). It has a very nice effect. The only problem I find with starting so soon is that the song has to end very quickly after communion if the musicians wish to receive the sacrament. We don’t do a post-communion song, so there is often a very long silence after communion.
Hi Emma,
At Corinda Graceville we have been starting the Communion hymn at the priest’s communion for the last couple of years.
For Sunday Masses, we pick communion hymns that have length and also a refrain so people can sing while in procession. We usually only have 1 Communion hymn. If we need a bit extra, we just have a little interlude (i.e. an instrumental verse) before singing the refrain again and leading back into singing the first verse if required.
I hope that makes sense.
