For our psalms, we have successfully moved from the assembly saying the response to singing it over the last couple of years, which enhances participation and meaning. The verses are still read out, except for special occasions, but I think psalms sung by a cantor is a bridge too far in our suburb.
We are now using Amanda McKenna’s Sing the Responsorial Psalms every week and they are working well. It is available at AOV.

Regarding singing psalm verses – I use Owen Alstott’s settings from OCP’s Respond and Acclaim. You’ve probably got two or three in their Guitar Accompaniment you’ve started blogging. They use simple chant verses and don’t require a large voice range, which is important if people have limited voices like mine! Because they are simple, at a pinch they can be sung a cappella. The negatives with them are that (1) the verses are from the New American Bible which in my opinion lack poetry, so I just use Revised Grail with the same tones; and (2) they are sold on a yearly basis (like “Break Open the Word”) rather than in one complete collection. The collections come with Gospel Acclamations which I don’t like at all.
One of your commenters uses GIA’s Guimont equivalent, but I have found them to have too much voice range for me and they cause difficulty for the pianist, who has trouble following text and notes at the same time, because many break convention by not starting phrases on the reciting tone.
Thanks, Chris.
I’m always impressed to hear of parishes with cantors singing the verses of the Psalms.

Geoff, thanks for Seed Scattered and Sown.
From next week onwards, our 7am mass will sing the Gloria from Mass Shalom instead of reciting.
That’s fine, Ming. It’s a good song that I hadn’t come across until I saw it in a liturgy Chris put up.
Geoff
I also like Marty Haugen’s As the Grains of Wheat (GA 194). I have only ever used it as an instrumental, and possibly as a solo.
