For the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Chris’s parish are using Michael Herry’s specially written song.
The sheet music is freely available at the Marists, where there is recording to which you can listen.
My backing is a little faster, as I think it is hard for an assembly to sing that slowly, but that leaves the risk of getting “sing-songy”. Care in all directions required.
Michael Herry has written some good liturgical songs over the years, but I’m not a fan of this one. Why have subtle melodic differences between verses, especially in material intended for congregational singing? These differences make it easier for the accompanist to make mistakes and makes it much more difficult for the congregation to get confidence and join in, especially as many (most?) cannot read music. More discipline please!!!
I agree entirely, Chris.
There is no indication that the verses are for a cantor, but with the differences you note, perhaps that was in his mind. Is it that songs written by people in religious orders suffer from the tendency to write for a particular community rather than assemblies in general?
Still, the price is right, and I applaud his generous spirit.
