This venerable Marian hymn haunted my wife’s school days but as a young heathen I managed to avoid it. Then again I had to sing “Onward Christian Soldiers”.
Godsongs has all the details including the usual text and sheet music, but I note it comes in a few different versions. For example, GA replaces the line “We sinners make our prayer through thee”, with “From sin’s domain God kept you free”.
The text is by John Lingard (1771-1851) and it is set to a traditional English tune, STELLA.
My BIAB backing is meant to be a nun’s ropey piano and a plain melody line.
