Christ, Be Near at Either Hand VAO 1/14

This is a setting of the Lorica of St Patrick to the traditional Irish folk tune “Garten” arranged by Gerard Gillen. I think it lovely and liturgically useful to boot.

The text is here with more verses than the three in VAO. You can listen to a snippet and purchase the sheet music from WLP. An arrangement in the public domain is at musicasacra.

My backing is Irish and spirited.

As is this version:

This is more sedate but still nice:

The tune presented at MusicaSacra is public domain, but I’m not so sure that the words are. I haven’t yet managed to confirm the dates for Canon John Fennelly. But the Breviary Hymns website says 1890–1966, which ties in with my suspicions of 1960-something.

Thanks Mary – I should have mentioned his name at least.

In “Voices As One” they give him no credit at all and the text is just called “The Lorica of St Patrick”. Perhaps they felt an Irish Priest would never seek copyright of the words of St Patrick however rearranged into a new hymn and so claim it as traditional and public domain. By virtue of a new arrangement of the old folk tune WLP have a copyright for themselves.

I couldn’t find anything more definitive.

      Geoff
